Akira Kurosawa
I heard that a 7 Samurai remake is coming in 2009. It's most likely going to be god awful like the 7 Samurai anime, so I figured I might as well see the highly acclaimed original just to see what all the hype is about. I haven't been around lately, because I've been watching & rewatching that 3 hour long Seven Samurai ish. What a pleasant surprise the movie actually lived up to it's reputation. I was expecting 7S to be another one of those dumbass samurai flicks that relied on overly excessive violence & superficial scenes of emotional development. Now don't get me wrong. I love excessively violent movies. That's why I love the 70's, 80's where exploitation cinema reigned. I just fucking hate it when they get portrayed as deep. (Most of Takashi Miike's films come to mind.) Let me get straight to the point. I fucking love Seven Samurai. It's in my top 5 list for best film of all time now. What's weird is that I'm normally not into straight forward narratives. (Which is why "Rashomon" is next in my Kurosawa to watch list. Rasho's style of story telling is more up my alley. Ran was going to be my second Kuro flick, but I couldn't find a torrent anywhere.) What made Seven Samurai tick was how every single minute of its 3 hour something time frame was used to set up & develop the characters within the movie. Hell, it takes 2 hours & 30 minutes before the actual battle starts. Even when the battle starts you're still treated to character development, & narrative plot twists. I was actually rooting for the samurai to pull it off to the very end. Most of all, 7S is one of the few movies I've seen that is actually deep without getting too convoluted or obtuse. (Most deep movies are usually more in the vein of a Lynch film.) I love the narrative plot twist in the end when Kambei says "The winners are those farmers, not us." Which makes you rethink the true meaning of what he meant when he claimed that he's only fought "losing battles" By the end of the movie we finally realize what he meant. He was saying that Samurai are just a weapon that people use in a time of need, but are then discarded by society once their role as been accomplished. I dunno man. That was just some powerful ass shit. Especially when you take into account all the subthemes & mini plots that are contained in the movie. This article explains more about that. http://www.alor.org/Triumph%20of%20The%20Past/The%20Seven%20Samurai.htm The scenes that really stuck out to me were when Kikuchiyo holds onto a baby & claims that he's just like him. (His family was killed by bandits.) The other one is when Rikichi reveals that the woman who was burned alive in the bandit hq was his wife who he gave to the bandits in order to appease them. This movie throws in so many character focused narrative twists that I've no doubt just ruined by spoiling them. This is everything that I thought Battle Royale was going to be. I always knew that BR was a stupid violent pos just from watching the commercials when I was in Japan. It's just that BR has a cult audience that fronts BR as if were deep & complex when it actually isn't. Battler Royale is about as complex as a "deep" video game. I can't praise Seven Samurai enough. It's a sad shame that most people will overlook this movie simply because it's old or foreign. I myself overlooked it, because I thought it was going to be another overrated ass Japanese movie. Filled with over glamorized violence & overt melodrama. While I could do without the melodrama in the beginning of Seven Samurai. I felt that the drama in 7S was genuinely pulled off in a realistic manner. The violence itself is more in tune with Saving Private Ryan. As in the battle scenes look gritty & realistic. Seven Samurai is everything that I thought Battle Royale was going to be in terms of characterization. Unlike Battle Royale I actually care for the cast in 7S due to their personalities, & personal convictions. Whereas in Battle Royale, I only rooted for the characters who I'd like to fuck. (Chigusa, Mitsuko, that leader chick from the Light House scene.) My connection to the battle royale cast was superficial whereas 7S reeled you in to their world & plight. Note: I dig Battle Royale. I just feel that the movie is being overrated for the wrong reasons. Kitano was the only character worth giving a fuck about in that film. Him & maybe Mitsuko. The BR movie somewhat falls into a trap where the villains are far more interesting than the lead protagonists. That is if you consider Mitsuku & Kitano villains in the first place.

Yeah, Kurosawa's samurai flicks are that awesome. I really have to get Sanjuro, just to se the blood shower which looks straigh out of Samurai Showdown Rashomon is pretty cool too.

I'm almost done dling Rashoman. From what I understand that movie is far more post modern. Rather than the straight forward hollywood apporach that Seven Samurai took. They say that Seven Samurai actually originated most of the stereotypical hollywood action movie conventions. Shit that's kinda hard to believe. Makes me wonder how shitty movies were back in the day if everything that made 7S so great wasn't even common place yet until 7S hit the big screen. A remake of The Hidden Castle just came out a couple days ago. The Last Princess http://www.kakushi-toride.jp/index.html The movie looks pretty horrible. I mean why the fuck is Jun Matsumo the lead character? To top it off he's a also a fucking love interest. The remake is doing every dumb ass cliche that Kurosawa films tended to avoid. The only saving grace imo is that they actually casted Hiroshi Abe to play the part of Mifune's Makabe. (Who imo is probably the only guy alive who could even hope to equal the screen presence of Toshiro Mifune's roles.) It's just too bad that Makabe plays a secondary role now. Fuckin' gay ass modern day Jap films. Why the fuck is the feminine guy always the lead character? Logic dictates that the man with the balls should be the lead. Especially since Hiroshi Abe is 6'3. Which would make him at least 7 inches taller than the original Makabe played by Mifune. Mifune's Makabe is still the best however. If only because Mifune is far more intimidating & mean looking. Now sure we could throw in the logic that Japan prefers female men, but then wtf was up with the original Hidden Castle? Toshiro Mifune was a manly badass & he was also a triple aaa star. (Hiroshi Abe is also a big name star, but he's nowhere near as popular as that Jun Matsumoto fag.) That's enough Matsumoto hate for now though. I've seen him in Gokusen & he's actually a pretty decent actor. I just think it sucks how a Kurosawa film was remade with a fuckin' faggot ass bishie lead. I shudder to think what that Seven Samurai remake is going to look like. I envision something that's as hilarriously bad as the 7Samurai video game. Where the fuck do people get this shit? Seven Samurai was more about the drama of playing your role that society has parlayed for you. Yet every single Seven Samurai adaption I've seen has always turned 7S into some retarded over the top Kitamura Animu like samurai bullshit. Yeah, Kurosawa's samurai flicks are that awesome. I really have to get Sanjuro, just to se the blood shower which looks straigh out of Samurai Showdown Yeah Tsubaki Sanjuro, & Yojimbo are pretty much what I expected out of Kurosawa. (Ass kicking chambara flicks.) I'm not really into kung fu/sword fighting flicks though, because they're all the same to me. I'm only into the chambara flicks that are over the top as hell like Lady Snowblood or Versus. What really won me over with Seven Samurai is the writing. Somebody should've told moi that 7S is actually just a drama about the fragile relationship between castes. The borders that we're born into & how they play their roles according to societies laws. (Such as farmers & samurai are forbidden to interbreed. Yet the person who originally created that rule was Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Who was a farmer himself.) This Kurosawa guy writes some pretty deepass shit. It's to the point where I don't even notice the battles, because they're just second fiddle when it comes to the character development. IMO Akira Kurosawa should be placed in a different genre away from Samurai Chambara films, because the Samurai motif is really more of a trojan horse. The real meat of Kurosawa films is the realistic drama & character relationships that are portrayed in his films. I love how multi layered all his characters are. Most of all Kurosawa knows how to relay drama without over doing it. Unlike most Asian directors. Most asian films I've seen will drown your ass out with pointless retarded melo drama. Video games are victim to this as well. (80% of them being Jrpgs. The other percentile being Hideo Kojima's games & the rest being filled out by Sega's Yakuza ) It's a sad shame that there are no comparable directors in the world today. Well actually one comes to mind, Martin Scorsese. As for modern day japanese directors only Takeshi Kitano could even hope to achieve such a title as a modern day Akira Kurosawa. The other two Ryuhei Kitamura, & Takashi Miike are overrated. Miike is heavily experimental. As a result he's very hit or miss. My fave from Miike being Audition & City of Lost Souls. Kitamura is just a Japanese John Woo without the mind for good story telling. In other words Kitamura is a one note guy who should be making cutscenes for video games instead of movies. (I mean that as a full time job mind you. I'm aware that he already did the cutscenes for DMC 3, & MGS Twin Snakes.)

His eyes looks as if they are going to pop out :P Kurosawa's samurai flicks will only gets better trough time, considering most new films are cheesy crap. For once id love to see a big production using more realistic style, like in kurosawa's films. New samurai movies do really look straigh out of a crappy anime

KIRBY 7- 05-26-2008

I've seen at least three Kurosawa films so far, and I'm shocked to see how different his films actually are. I was expecting him to be a Ryuhei Kitamura blueprint since Kitamura is always comparing himself to Kurosawa. Seriously though. I don't understand why Kurosawa is known for Samurai films, because his films barely have any fights in it. I notice his sense of visual imagery & story direction far more than I do his battle choreography. Which is mediocre at best. Well, it depends. If you want to be entertained like a Hong Kong action film than Kurosawa is the wrong guy to turn to. If you want more subdued less interesting but realistically depicted sword fights then yeah Kurosawa is pretty much where it's at. Although I don't understand why people would pay money just to watch some boring ass realistic sword fights. Kurosawa makes bank, because his films actually have compelling plots. I wouldn't even label Kurosawa as an action director. He's more in the same vein as Martin Scorsese. A true artistic visionary. Or maybe it's the other way around. Scorsese is like Kurosawa. I need to see more Kurosawa films to see which is which. I will say that Scorsese does for the American mobsters what Kurosawa does for Samurai. The Samurai/Mafia theme is just decoration. The real draw point is the drama that unfolds, the visual direction & the characters/character chemistry that are depicted in their films. I just saw Rashomon yesterday. I need to see it again, because I fell asleep, hah hah. IMO, Rashomon has more in common with Killer 7 than most of these other films that people constantly bring up. You'll honestly have no idea what the hell is going on, because every bodie's depiction of reality & truth is so different from one another. I need to see this film again, because I fell asleep. Therefore I missed out on a shit load of symbolism. Seven Samurai was far more entertaining imo. Rashomon, like Killer 7 is one of those plot narratives where the viewer has to take an active part in piecing together the plot. I fell asleep, because I wasn't in a mood to think. Here's some of the best Rashomon speculation I've seen. http://akirakurosawa.info/forums/topic/rashomon-the-audiencethe-truth-and-the-baby This is the type of meticulous speculation that I would like to see for Killer 7. I love how Kurosawa's fans recognize that there are no absolutes in Rashomon. Which is a fact that I keep trying to express about Killer 7, but no matter what people keep pressing on about answers that were never there in the first place. I guess that just shows how more mature & developed the movie going audience when compared to the video game demographic. I think K7's main downfall in the West is that we all rely on a plot faq to define the story for us. I mean seriously everybody is always asking the same dumbass questions about K7. The only way to get the profound answer that one seeks is to first ask a question that would net you that profound answer that you so desire. Most people ask irrelevant bullshit such as why did Garcian kill the Killer 7. People don't seem to realize that the term "Killer 7" is actually a word used to cover up the Union hotel murders, but I'll explain more about that in another thread. I've noticed that in Japan the K7 theories are are far more varied. Although in Japan it's commonly accepted that K7 is politically focused. Whereas in the West we see K7 as some kind of religious fable. Why, I dunno. We tend to equate anything that's deep, or profound to the fucking bible for some reason. His eyes looks as if they are going to pop out Razz I think he's trying to force out a poker face look. Since this is the first time that he's ever been casted to playing the badass role. Despite the fact that he's pretty big for a jap guy. (Logic would dictate that he'd get more action roles due to his size. Instead that Tak guy from Versus gets all the action parts.) For some reason Abe is always playing the the big/tall dumbass oaf of a side kick role. http://i.yimg.jp/images/talent/large/m93/m93-0111-060719.jpg

I really liked the ending. Myself I love realistic fights, even if they are boring. I would like exaggerated sword fights if the movies were portrayed more stylized and they used better costumes and such.

Myself I love realistic fights, even if they are boring. I would like exaggerated sword fights if the movies were portrayed more stylized and they used better costumes and such. Same here. It's the main reason why I love Kurosawa's films. They feel so authentic. I've never seen anybody portray Japan with such a respectful manner to authenticity. Most japanese shit is often overblown & exaggerated. Hell most asian films in general have god awful Dragon Ball Z like fights. I can't stand that shit. In Kurosawa's films all battles tend to only last for 3 sec. which further enforces how skilled & talented the swordsman is. Kurosawa is truly is the best director out there. I now have a new found respect for the film industry after seeing what it's truly capable of. I usually scoff at the movie business in general. Kurosawa has shown moi what true movie making is all about. (He doesn't rely on gimmicks at all. Just pure story telling which makes for a refreshing cinematic experience imo.) It's too bad I never gave his films a chance till now. (I assumed that he was another overrated Japanese director.) So far I've seen Yojimbo, 7 Samurai, Ran, & Rashamon. So far Seven Samurai is the best overall. Ran is the most artistic. Yojimbo while nowhere near as deep as most of his other films. It at least does a good job of playing the role of a popcorn flick. I never noticed that Way of the Samurai was a complete homage/rip off of Yojimbo even down to the oversized henceman. I'm dling Sanjuro & Throne of Blood right now. Throne of blood gets played on tv in Japan all the time. Which is why I thought he was more of a Kitamura type. I never actually sat down & watched Throne of Blood from start to finish though. I just flipped through the channels constantly looking for a kickass commercial to pop up. Japanese commercials are far more entertaining than most of the crap on japanese tv. It sure pays to actually watch these films with subtitles. Kurosawa's attention to story & historical accuracy is amazing. I just can't enough of it. I like how he actually portrays Samurai relying more on guns than swords. Hell in fact Kurosawa's films are so realistic that most of the Pre Tokugawa era samurai don't even use swords in his films. (In real life katana's were more of a ceremonial decoration. Katana were routinely used as a secondary weapon once their spears became unusable.) Shit, if Kurosawa weren't dead already. I'd imagined that he would've died of an heart attack after seeing "The Last Samurai". The historical inaccuracies in the movie were annoying as fuck. I hated how the samurai in that movie treated guns as if they were dishonorable yet Samurai used guns all the time in real life. I downloaded Hidden Fortress but the subtitles won't work. What other Kurosawa titles do you recommend? Right now I'm on the fence between Stray Dog, & Kagemusha. I fear that I've already seen the best that he has to offer. (Seven Samurai, Ran, & Yojimbo) What amazes me is how different those three films are from another, & yet they all manage to succeed at what they were going for. I can't wait to purchase an entire boxset of his filmography. Which is unusual for I, since I find most films to be too boring to watch more than once. I think I'm going to expand my horizons to some Non Kurosawa Mifune films. I hella got to see Zatoichi meets Yojimbo.

ferlanga- 06-01-2008

Only know those you mentioned. The rest of kurosawa's film dont seem to be chambara flicks, which doesnt interest me. Btw, "for a fistfull of dollars" is the true Kurosawa ripoff

Jedilink- 08-01-2008

Dude, there is not an actor alive that can capture the same kind of presence on-screen that Toshiro Mifune had. He's amazing. DEFINATELY one of the best actors EVER in my opinion...which in this case is FACT.
