Hey, been lurking a while but this is a good thread to start getting in on discussion. I'm not really a fan of the current gen myself today, if I came across a huge pile of cash I'd probably end up spending it on some old PS1, Saturn and Megadrive games rather than splurge out on a new console, even if I were to buy a new console it would be a Japanese Saturn or something.I'm thinking of getting me a PC Engine/Turbo grafx 16. JP Saturn is definitely a good choice. A lot of kickass games from that era. (I emulated most of them.)
Cadillacs and DinosaursI love this shit. Big fucking guns, big fucking dinosaurs, big fucking gore, big fucking asses (Hannah) I wish capcom would bring out another game like Aliens versus Predator
Osman Strider 1 & 2How could I forget Strider?
Pirates! GoldI love this game. It was like a better looking version of Uncharted Waters, but not as open ended.
Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium Fuck yeah.Did you get Fire ProWrestling Returns for the PS2 yet? I have an entire stable of Capcom.SNK/ & Sega characters in my game. (Most of the Sega characters came from Yakuza/Yakuza II though.)
I've got to admit I never grew up with a SNES, hate to bring fanboyism in here too but why do cats always think SNES is the best console ever? The people who say that are usually Jrpg fanbois. They don't really play games. With that said FF IV, FF VI, Secret of mana, Chrono Trigger were some of my favorite games of that era, but to me what made the snes is Kirby Super Star. Personally my favorite is a three way tie between Snes, Genesis, & PS2 (Snes had a lot of kickass games that were Japan only.) PS2 is up there, because PS2 has a lot of hidden gems. Especially the games that end up stuck in Japan. ANother plus to PS2 was the backwards compatibility which gave you acess to your PSOne library. Now there was an assload of badass Japanese PSONE games that never made it out of Japan. Whenever they did it was typically relegated to a Euro only release. (Dark Messiah/Hell Night) Man, 8 bit Nintendo had a shit load of kickass games too. Current gen would be so much better had they made games like Shadowgate using current gen tech. Current gen's main problem is that they keep making the same 3rd person space marine shooting game over & over. Genesis was indeed the best though. At the time they were the only system outside of the Neogeo to bring somewhat accurate arcade ports to the consoles. Have you played Thuder Force III for the SNES? Don't because it fucking sucks. That port is laggy as fuck, & the music sucks. Everybody knows that you're not playing a true Thunderforce game if the music is ass.
SMT: NocturneThe last great megaten game. MT shall you rest in peace.
God HandThat game is popular around here.
Contra: Shattered Soldier The Red StarI still need to try out these two. You know what game I forgot? I used to love the first two Ninja Gaidens back in the day. Even the NG Snes trilogy is still pretty good when compared to todays standards of gaming. They were the original movie style games, but they had the level design to back up all the long intermissions.
Do I know you from somewhere? I know a lot of Nekos, but they're usually female.I can't say you do, Neko is pretty much just a nickname my girl and few people online call me.
I'm thinking of getting me a PC Engine/Turbo grafx 16. JP Saturn is definitely a good choice. A lot of kickass games from that era. (I emulated most of them.)I got Magic Engine the other day, got any good games to recommend?
Did you get Fire ProWrestling Returns for the PS2 yet? I have an entire stable of Capcom.SNK/ & Sega characters in my game. (Most of the Sega characters came from Yakuza/Yakuza II though.)I wish, the PAL release was only released in Italy and to import costs some big bucks, I know I'm behind with importing a shit though, I should have Magic Swap or something by now, I guess that's the consequence of being broke all the time.
The people who say that are usually Jrpg fanbois. They don't really play games. With that said FF IV, FF VI, Secret of mana, Chrono Trigger were some of my favorite games of that era, but to me what made the snes is Kirby Super Star.Yeah I figured, I still hear people regarding Chrono Trigger as being the best RPG ever, I never got into it to be honest, I like FFVI though.
(Dark Messiah/Hell Night)I'd agree with you there, I have 70+ PS2 games right now, it really does have the most diverse catalog of games. Infact the reason I got a PS2 was for BC since my PS1 disk drive had some problems. I didn't get an actual PS2 game until a year later.
Man, 8 bit Nintendo had a shit load of kickass games too. Everybody knows that you're not playing a true Thunderforce game if the music is ass.Yeah the NES was good, mainly companies like Capcom and Konami did their stuff on that console, my favorite game was Gargoyle's Quest, I can barely remember anything about it, but I remember it being hard and a lot of fun. I hate the current gen too because of the lack of creativity going on, with the current technology flying around it pisses me off that 80% of games today are generic FPS titles, shit GTAIV was garbage, imagine if you took the game engine and flipped shit around and tried to make a Hitman title? (or any other kind of game like that) There's the power to expand on the RPG genre a lot now these days but we're just seeing some Frankenstein FPS shit with stats (see Oblivion) I'm not a part of the Fallout fanbase currently stabbing their eyes out over Fallout 3 but you can see where they're coming from, Bethesda don't make RPG's, they make FPS dungeon crawler/side quest titles. And yeah I like the Megadrive best because the games were more like arcade titles, also the platform games were a lot better too. ThunderForce III on the SNES? Sounds like a hackjob to me, haha.
The last great megaten game. MT shall you rest in peace.I heard that.
I used to love the first two Ninja Gaidens back in the day. Even the NG Snes trilogy is still pretty good when compared to todays standards of gaming. They were the original movie style games, but they had the level design to back up all the long intermissions.Yeah I grew up with the first Ninja Gaiden on the NES, game always kicked my ass haha. Anyway I noticed you liked Shock Troopers and Contra, do you like the Metal Slug series as well? Shit when it comes to run n' guns and just arcade games in general, MS X & 3 are some mean games, I can beat MS3 on one credit but the last few levels of X kick my ass. Also I've been meaning to get into the DW series, DW4XL is the best to start with right? I always see some games in one store but I never picked any up cause I didn't know which title to start with, guess I should try out DW4 then since it goes for chump change over here.
ps2: siren disaster report baldur's gate dark alliance champions of norrath bard's tale i like dungeon crawlers and survival games i guessYeah, I've noticed. They're pretty good choices too. I'm still hitting myself for trading Norrath for Summoner 2. (Although SUmmoner 2 was a good game. It's just too fucking short.) Another thing I like is that you picked true survival games. The thing I hate most about survival games is that you usually control firearm experts. It's one of the reasons that I can't get into Silent Hill, because most of their characters still seem to be somewhat proficient at weapon handling. Whereas games like SIren usually force you to use characters who can't fight worth shit. I wish we could see more games like disaster report, but human/spike seems to be the only company that ever develops games like that.
shit GTAIV was garbage, imagine if you took the game engine and flipped shit around and tried to make a Hitman title? (or any other kind of game like that)Motha fucking shit, you just made me orgasm at the mere thought of a GTA sized Hitman game.
I got Magic Engine the other day, got any good games to recommend?Cadash, Lords of thunder, Rondo of blood, Xak III, Ys 1 +2,might & magic III, super fire pro wrestling special, order of the griffon, Dungeon Explorer II.
I still hear people regarding Chrono Trigger as being the best RPG ever, I never got into it to be honest, I like FFVI though.LOL, I wouldn't even consider Chrono Trigger as a rpg, nor most Jrpgs in general. I actually sold Chrono Trigger just to pony up some money for Kirby Superstar. Everybody thinks I'm a retard when I admit that. (Even at this forum.) I don't see the problem. Kirby Superstar is the best damn game released on the Snes.
ThunderForce III on the SNES? Sounds like a hackjob to me, haha. It's actually called Thunder Spirits which is really just a port of the Thunder Force arcade game that was based off of THIII They're all basically the same game so I just call it TH III anyway.
Also I've been meaning to get into the DW series, DW4XL is the best to start with right? I always see some games in one store but I never picked any up cause I didn't know which title to start with, guess I should try out DW4 then since it goes for chump change over here.Hardly, DW4XL is just an expansion pack. The original DW 4 itself is considered the worst DW game. (The worst Warriors in general is the original Samurai Warriors without the Xtreme Legends expansion pack.) The main thing that keeps me going back to DW4 is the body guard system. (You get ten body guards. The dragon guards will rip shit up without you having to help them out.) Forget Dynasty Warriors, the series sucks ass, but it's just too damn addicting at the same time. It's a lot like potato chips. They taste like shit, but you keep stuffing your mouth with them. If I were you I'd wait for Sep. 23 2008, & Nov. 18, 2008. (Two big Warriors releases are dropping.) Next month Warriors Orochi 2 is coming out. The Orochi games are the best series to start off with, because they give you access to the entire character roster of the Samurai & Dynasty warrior games. (Plus new Orochi specific characters. Orochi characters are mostly based off of gods) That or you could wait for November to role around when Dynasty Warriors 6 for the ps2 ships out. (DW 6 uses a combo system that's different from the rest of thw warriors games.) It's called DW6, but it actually has more features, & less clone character than the DW6 that came out for PS3. Check out Koei Warriors for more info about the differences between the warriors games. http://koeiwarriors.co.uk/ If you want my opinion, I wouldn't be able to decide, because I'm getting both Orochi 2, & PS2 DW6. They de cloned my favorite Shu character Yue Ying.
Then again that may not be saying much, because I don't give a fuck about shu. I'm all about the Wei kingdom.
Although Shu did get the best de clones. (Ma Chao & Yue Ying)
Wei got shat on, who the fuck uses Cao Pi, and I hate on Zhang He, because I hate the way he looks.

Don't be fooled by the pink. This is a game that everybody needs in their life.
The following are old ass games that I still own & recommend.

(It's actually SFII Turbo in that box, but that's because I used to own every snes version of SF save for the original SFII.)
That port sucked, but I was a hardcore Samurai showdown fan back in the day.
I even own the rpg.
It's actually two games in one.
I only beat the Amakusa story so far. The Mikazuki game is too damn long.
Megaten back when it used to be punk. My favorite SMT IF timeline megaten. (The if timeline are Megaten games based off of the setting of SMT if.)
Many people consider Soul Hackers to be the best megaten game. Normally this would be the part where I'd disagree...
Thankfully Soul Hackers actually is one of the best Megaten titles ever made. (The PS2 Megaten bullshit is nothing like SH.)
The only one that even comes close to SH is SMT Nocturne.
What many people don't realize is that part of the reason why I'm so infuriated at the Devil Summoner Kuzunoha Raido games is because that pos is supposed to be part of the same series as this godly gem you see here.
(SH is godly in Jrpg terms, because it plays like a watered down SMT, and is heavily plot focused like the Persona games.
In Western rpg terms SH would merely be considered tolerable. Such as the likes of the original Persona games, Romancing saga, & Earthbound series.)
I even own the strategy guide for this shit.
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, my second favorite SMT IF timeline Megaten. (EP is my 5th favorite megaten overall. Preceded by Persona Be Your True Mind, SMT nocturne, Devil Summoner II Soul Hackers, & Majin Tensei II)
Many fans claim that Innocent Sin is better, but I believe the people who say that are usually people who never actually played Innocent Sin.
Yes, IS has the better plot, but EP had the better gameplay, more characters and more branching paths to take.
I'd rather go for the game that has more content, that & Maya Amano was drop dead sexy in EP.
Plus the Japanese version came with the Sumaru Tv disc. (We only got the anime trailer & the cut up review in the American release.)
This disc gives you access to all the information that you need to know for the original Persona trilogies plot. (Be Your true mind, Innocent Sin, & Eternal Punishment. Persona 3 is actually the 4rth game and it has almost nothing to do with the original persona games.)

People diss me all the time, because I'm always labeling Maken Shao as a megaten. All I have to say is that it looks like a megaten, sounds (Fuck Shoji Meguro, this is what a real Megaten ost is supposed to sound like.) like a megaten, and even feels like a megaten.
If everybody else in the world gets to label Persona 3 & 4, & Devil SUmmoner 3 & 4 as megaten.
Then I reserve the right to classify Maken Shao as a megaten, because it looks, & feels more like a megaten game than the current megatens ever did.

The last great megaten ever made.
(Which is coincidentally Cozy Okada's last megaten game.)
This is the original version of SMT Nocturne. (The one without Dante from Devil May Cry.)
I feel that the Yakuza games are overrated as hell, but I'm posting them here anyway, because of how classy the JP covers look.
I still can never understand how people compare the fighting engine to Streets of rage. SOR's battle system was more similar to the Dynasty, Samurai, Orochi Warriors games, imo.
(Sor & Warriors have the same control scheme. One button for attacking, one button for jumping, one button for super moves.)
Yakuza 2 is coming out in America next month. I want to buy it just to support the Yakuza franchise, but at the same time I don't want to waste money on a game that I played over two years ago.
Yak is good, but not that good. It's just the only decent game that Sega has been making in a long while.
Speaking of Sega they made the best damn games of all time. Many people quit gaming once dreamcast died, and I can see why.
Look at how shallow the gaming industry is these days.
(I can't blame them. Game developers need to justify the huge ass budgets so they try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.)

THE RPG, & THE STRATEGY GAME

Diehard arcade
No More Heroes, What?
Kenka Bancho has everything that NMH has & more.
Yes that's right you even get shitty side quests jobs in Kenka Bancho, but at least you're not forced to slaver through the mini game bullshit.
You can even customize your hero to look & dress exactly like Kunio kun from the river city ransom games.
Best of all you even get to recruit two fellow juvenile delinquents to fight along side you. (You get at least 13 characters to choose from. ALthough I only use two. The bald drop out, and the fucka with big bushy eye brows.
Kengo 2, This game is said to be the successor to Bushido Blade. (The combat is nowhere near as good as BB. However the training & development of your warrior makes up for it.)
I didn't like this game at first, but it's pretty cool once you realize that it's like a simulation/fighting game hybrid.
Taiko Risshiden. This is what true rpg gaming is about mothafuckas.
Rpging isn't about progressing through linear stories that pretend to be movies.
Rpgs are all about vast open worlds that react to your every action.
Choices that constantly affect the consequences of your character's every move.
In one game I was fired from the job, because I couldn't understand what the hell I was supposed to do, but it didn't matter I ran into a girl that was getting jumped by bamdits.
I saved her & then she married me.
I then went around the entire country of Japan just mugging everybody I saw so I could sustain somewhat livable conditions for my wife.
I wanted to join the various ninja clans that offered me protection, but I didn't want to risk having them hunt me down in case I failed one of their tasks. (Due to not being able to rad wtf is going on in this game. Even some Japanese natives have problems trying to read Koei strategy/rpg games, because of the advanced kanji that's used in the game.)
My game finally ended when I tried to jump a samurai. Only to see him one hit kill my guy when he threw a big ass fireball at me.
(I'm not making this up. He really did throw a fire ball at me. Which is funny, because Taiko Risshiden is a mostly realistic game.)
Note: Your supposed to try to unify Japan in this game, but this is just one example of how open ended Taiko Risshiden series are.
You can make a living as a pirate, a gambler, a dancer.
These games are very similar to Uncharted Waters. Which is no surprise, because he also created the Taiko series.
Speaking of rpgs, here's a more traditionally Jrpg one.
This one is good though. It's the true sequel to Tales of Destiny. Aptly titled Tales of Destiny II.
TOD II is actually one of the weaker entries in the tales games (Melee fighters are severely nerfed in this game. Magic users are too overpowered.), but hey at least it's better than that Devil Summoner Kuzunoha Raido trash.
My favorite survival horror game, mainly because it's the only one that actually scared me.
It's even scary to play in the day time.
Heavy Metal Thunder
This game sucks, but it looks like some overrated shit (Contact) that Suda 51 would make, and then everyone would call him a genius for it.
I bought it, because I'm an Aikawa Nanase fan.
She was hot in that pic, too bad my scanner made it all blurry.
Speaking of Suda, these are the Suda 51 games that makes me want to label him a visionary.
The plots for these games are too fucking amazing to have been wasted on a video game.
Video games aren't taken seriously as a story telling medium, no matter how good the plots are. Mainly because most games with good plots tend to get ignored by the masses. (Vampire Bloodlines, Persona 2 EP, etc.)
The games that do get lauded for story are usually just pretentious bullshit like Final Fantasy VII, Assassin's Creed.
See more Silver Case/FSR.Moonlight Syndrome/Killer7 plot discussion at this thread.

The following aren't imports, but they might as well be, because these games are so hard to find in the west.
My favorite series of all time, and are also the reason why I thinking of giving up on gaming for good. (The series ended.)
Nobunaga's Amibtion, & Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Then this Asterix beat em up came to my knowledge a few days ago, and is kinda good, it remind me of those Mickey mouse magical adventure games for snes.
