Death Note
This is the best shounen ever (except for MPD Psycho, whick shouldn't be considered shounen anyway.) Now I hate shounen as much as drunkee, but this anime/manga kicks ass. No whiney goody two-shoes protagonist, generic art, nor any "winning through resolve" here, just the Light killing criminals and avoiding police with his sheer intelligence. Any DN fans here?

Death Note is an anomaly. It's every bit as dark, gothic, intelligent & edgy as the original Persona trilogy was, but yet at the same time... Death Note happens to have wide mass appeal for some strange reason. Even Madonna is into Death Note. (Persona was always popular, but not this popular. How the hell did Death Note become so BIG?) I love Death Note, because at it's core it's really just a battle of wits between a delusional sociopath (Light) & an autistic freak. (L) Hell, Light eventually starts killing off anybody who gets in his way by the end of the 3rd episode. What I find irritating is why is it that video games rarely have intriguing plots like Death Note? I wish video games would be as engaging (story wise) as Death note. (Only game that I can think of that's a bit similar is Silver Case. The Kira websites sound exactly like the Kill the Past websites in SC.) Death note has no fireballs at all, yet it still manages to maintain a sense of dread & suspense through out the entirety of the show. (I've only seen the first 8 episodes of Death Note. I glanced at the manga, but I didn't bother tor read them yet.) The only other anime series that keeps me glued to my seat is the Ghost in the Shell SAC/2nd Gig series. Which is better? I can't say. GITS keeps me interested through it's political scenarios. Death Note has constant plot twists that happen every 5 min., but it rarely ever feels forced. I hear that Death Note gets even more fucked up & crazy when Misa finally appears in the show. Misa Amane Shit, Misa looked like a Persona chick. This is my favorite Death Note site http://deathnotes.kefi.org/ Too bad it doesn't have much content yet. I love speculation style sites. I can't stand the other Death Note site that everybody else uses. http://www.deathgod.org/ The editorials in that site sound as if it were written by a fan girl. I prefer my shit to sound a bit more professional & all knowing than that. (I want to know cold hard facts. Not what the hell the damn webmaster thinks.)

While I loved the look of the character, Misa was actually the most annoying character for me in terms of personality. She was basically a ditzy girl and just obsessed over Light/Kira. She kind of reminded me of annoying American fangirls that obsess/swoon over some shitty Japanese visual kei singer or something haha. I loved the story up until a certain turning point.. then it just lost steam to me.

You're alluding to the part when Light loses his memory I presume. (Hey, it's a habit of mine. I tend to spoil everything before I actually play the game or watch the show. I only do this with anime, manga & video games, because there's an ass load of derivative shit out there.) IMO, I think Death Note should've ended with L. The battle of wits between a sociopath & an autistic freak was pretty damn original. When that battle finally reached it's conclusion. The show continued on with little boy genius's & shit as the show progressed. I hear that Death Note starts conforming to most of the shounen cliches during the part when Light loses his memory. While I loved the look of the character, I hella dig her look as well. http://japanx.wordpress.com/2007/09/16/misa-cosplay/ I used to think that cos play was ust retarded bullshit, but there's some pretty good 'uns at this blog. http://www.xanga.com/shila_4ever I kinda wish that her style were a bit more popular over here in the U.S. I get bored as hell seeing all these ambercrombie & generic ass hip hop ho looking types around here. (I hate the EMO bitches the most.) I can't stand gothic lolis, but Amane's fashion sense seems to be a bit more (gothic) traditional. (LuLu from FF X would've been the most ttraditional had she been wearing a standard Victorian dress. Instead of that lulz 100 belt get up.) Amane's look kinda reminded me of a blonde Nemissa. (Nemissa wasn't an idiot though. Nemi was playful & kicked shit loads of ass. Hitomi, her human counterpart is shy & demure. Naomi the strongest character who can play as was the stronger sensual type.) Although I haven't actually read or seen any episodes with her in it yet. I think she's at least (LULZ) worthy, because she's so fucking ignorant that she actually ends up being almost as dangerous as Light & L are. (I can't believe she did that Shinigami eyes deal more than once, lol.) Here's some pretty interesting reads http://deathnotes.kefi.org/essays/ningenfucker_ironicurban.html http://deathnotes.kefi.org/essays/serria_misavillain.html Heh heh I love the analogy btw. She was basically a ditzy girl and just obsessed over Light/Kira. She kind of reminded me of annoying American fangirls that obsess/swoon over some shitty Japanese visual kei singer or something haha. What's worse is when they start speaking in both high pitched Japanese, & English at the same time. People like them piss me off, because it gives everybody the impression that japanese music is all bullshit. (Although it is now. Only indie shit is good these days.) If only they knew how fucking ugly a lot of these Jrock guys are without their make up.

Indeed Death Note was supposed to end after L dies I think, but apparently the mangaka decided to continue... and it didn't end well. The good news is that a TV special came out that's basically a retelling of DN up until L dies with a deleted scene or two added. I'm dl'ing now, as I'd like to see DN end in a much better way. I'm surprised DN became popular as well, it definately deserves it. It's even the basis of a shitload of memes, mainly because of the dramatized parts like epic chip eating, lol.

Visionnerz- 01-04-2008

Yeah it was around the part where Light lost his memory when I started to lose interest. The whole battle between Light and L was just awesome and kept me going back to see what would happen. Even though I liked both characters, I really was hoping Light would kill L .. he was just too good and always suspecting. heh

Kroni- 01-04-2008

L was kinda boring, never seemed to have any passion. Light, on the other hand, was breeming with confidence, ego, and passion for his cause. Nice analysis site drunkee, too bad other good series don't have in-depth analysis sites that. On the subject of women, Ray Penbar's wife is hot. She was also extremely motivated and intelligent. Maybe too intelligent and motivated, which led to her gettin' Kirownd. All I can say is I hope Ray doesn't wait until marriage.

Visionnerz- 01-04-2008

Naomi Misora was an awesome character. Really hot and like you mentioned intelligent. I even like the name Naomi lol which is why I was surprised and disappointed at how quickly she was killed off. The episode of her discussion with Light was probably one of my favorite episodes from the anime. I felt that it had a film noir vibe to it. Light becoming desperate to find out her real name and Naomi being cautious about the whole situation.. damn. The tension was great during that episode.

I am a DN fan too. I think I've already given hints to that with my Maximum the Hormone post in the music thread. The anime series is good, although my preference goes to the manga. The anime turns a couple of scenes cool, that would normally be boring, but conversely, the ending of the anime is boring and melodramatic as opposed to the sudden brutal ending of the manga. But the conclusion of the story has been a huge discussion in message boards, as well as the validity of Kira's actions as opposed to L's, and so on. But, although I like Light or Raito's, character, I thought that the ending really showed who's on top of the food chain in the grand scheme of things. I loved how in the end, Raito discovered to his shock that he has been Ryuuk's bitch all along since the first second he started using the note. I can't believe Raito didn't see that one coming from the start. So my favourite character is... Ryuuk! Goddamn, Amane Misa is fucking annoying, although fuckable. That cosplay girl looks great, I'd rather have that chick instead of what we got in the live action.

mokoi- 01-04-2008

Death note is by far a really great series. I love it for complex situations and nicly written story.

Mecha Sonic- 01-05-2008

Yeah, great series. But yeah, I agree that the manga ended better then the anime (but don't they always?).

Dalemushashi- 01-07-2008

Great Manga, my second favorite of all time. The ending was good in some ways and unsatisfying in others. Bad luck was why he lost. Kira is justice.
