I dug Gurren Lagann but I couldn't really take it seriously as "TEH MOS AWSUM ANIMU EVARR". Sure beats having to watch some of the crap that came out this year though.
Yeah, Evangelion is actually watchable. I don't really keep track of modern anime, because most of it sucks. (And tries too hard to be philosophical.)
it's certainly more intelligently written than most anime
That's not saying much. Most anime have plots that are just as horrible as most Jrpgs.
Evangelion is a fun show when it doesn't take itself too seriously.
Eva is actually pretty good when it tries to be psychologically confusing or broken like a Suda 51 game.
(The psychological segments with Asuka were hilarious.
"Or that girl over there. Will laugh at you".)
It's when it tries to get all philosophical that EVA starts to rear its ugly head out.
I hated Evangelion ever since the day I saw the final 4 episodes from the tv series.
Ah god, talk about repetitive. The Boss from MGS 3 has nothing on Shinji.
This mothafucka is a drama queen. What annoys moi about Eva is that it pretends to be profound, but it doesn't actually have a "deeper" message to speak of.
Granted the original GITS Stand Alone Complex series didn't really have a deeper message either, but GITS was tolerable, because Motoko's sexy round ass was hanging out of her thong, (LOL) and GITS isn't angsty at all.
The peepz in GITS always sounded like they were trying to make a point. Whereas Eva gives me the impression that it just did random ass (religious) symbolism shit in order to pass it off as "deep" & "complex".
Although in retrospect that's probably why Evangelion is still popular to this day.
I'm guessing that a lot of socially dysfunctional otaku types relate with the plights & anxieties that they share with Shinji Ikari.
In a similar manner to how Cloud Strife from FF VII relates to most socially dysfunctional video gamers.

It's funny, I tend to think of the Tachikomas being the highlight of GITS aside from the major. If their voices annoy you, fair enough. I think they're absolutely adorable and endearing. The fact they don't have a human form further emphasizes the way they express themselves in the show. It's like they're curious and mischevious little kids shaped like tanks. A nice 3d patch of royal blue always lightens up the amount of seriousness in GITS SAC.
Ergo Proxy tried way too hard to pass itself off as deep, but one thing they really did well was the subtle development of a mechanical girl named Pino. It's scary how her progression in that series seems so.. Natural.
One thing I didn't like about Eva, and plenty of other shows for that matter, is that they concentrate way too much on a problem and don't look beyond to find different ways to resolve one. It's like all of a sudden this miracle solution occurs and everyone's happy again.
That deus ex machina stuff I find works as a red herring.... AKA... Plot twist. Just so long as it's plausible.......

I hate NGE, I did think it was pretty good as a drama until that instrumentality thing, whatever that was.
Was pretty obsessed watching the first 20 eps, I was a kid back then and had to wait a rather long time for the next 6 to come out. Which was an utter disappointment when I actually watched them.
Which was just that instrumentality project all over again.
What's so good about this anime anyway?

ah that is so true
but in terms of the subject matter it was tackling, it was certainly mature and very daring - that said a vast majority of the show is incredibly cringe worthy (ie pretty much everything to do with shinji, rei and asuka unfortunately)
the relationship between ristuko, misato, and kaji was definitely one of the more well constructed aspects of the show

lol, evangelion.
I was an evangelion fanboy before realizing that it sucks.
I mean, I still have all the dvd. I hate myself for having bought this shit.
I mean, there are some things that I like, but it just too much pretentious. HI, I AM EVANGELION, I AM THE MOST DEEP ANIME IN THE WORLD AND I WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE TO DESTROY ANY OTHER ANIME DVD BECAUSE I RULE SO MUCH THAT YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING BUT ME. I LOVE ME.

Evangelion, the emo of anime...

Hi I am evangelion I'm better than you.

Evangelion gets pretty emo at some points.

Yeah, I agree, the anime is overrated and all the emos at school adore it. Guh......
Why is practically anything popular always crap?
Look at Inuyasha, yeah it was good the first few seasons, but then it just got too repetitive and crappy, yet it was still none-the-less adored by every emo/otaku alive. Honestly...... :/

Inu Yasha is Ranma with the demons. The relationship between inu and kagome is the same exact of ranma and akane, lol.

Wow, that's just sad. YOU'D think the creator had a bit more originally than that. I mean for God's sake if you're gonna make a new story throw some originallity in there. *rolls eyes*

I don't recall ever mentioning or speaking negatively of the Tachikomas.
I don't even hint at the Tachikoma's not even in the sligh-*test*-('").
I specifically called out SAC for a reason and not just GITs in general.
The Tachikomas to me are a GITS mainstay. They're the exact opposite of the Major & Batou who are mostly machine but originally human.
Tachikoma's are basically a.i. that have evolved into human conscious like mechanical life forms.
They are mostly human in an inquisitive sense, but are originally machine.
Anyway when I said that GITS SAC doesn't have a deeper message.
Obviously I was referring to the actual "Stand Alone Complex" of the first season.
Basically the main conflict of GITS SAC is that a certain percentage of the Japanese population went out of control due to the influence of the laughing man meme.
In other words the subject of the Laughing man in GITS was nothing more than another ridiculous Internet meme
http://binaryfractal.blogspot.com/2008/03/5-internet-memes-stolen-from-anonymous.html
that spiraled out of control, & indirectly influenced the current trend of sub culture, economics, & political affairs.
One could say that revelation in itself is deep. I thought it was deep myself when It was first revealed in GITS.
Unfortunately we already knew that by the end of the 5th or 7th episode in GITS SAC when the Laughing Man decoy was assassinated.
Aramaki figured out the entire scenario & relayed the info to Motoko Kusanagi during the end of that episode.
(It's the one where the laughing man logo was embed everywhere you looked due to how out of control the meme had gotten. You even see Motoko looking at a lil' kid with a laughing man insignia engraved on her.)
The rest of the series after that episode was actually irrelevant, because the Major & the Laughing man himself basically repeat the same exact shit that was already known earlier on in the series.
This is why I do not consider the original GITS SAC deep.
It had nothing to do with my supposed hate of Tachikomas that I never mentioned nor implied. (I don't think I have at least.)
Now granted I do hate on the more comical, light hearted feel that Persona 3 took with the Persona series, but that's because Persona usually revolved around Japanese sub culture more than it did Animu lulz.
Perona 3's direction is in direct confliction with the original inception of what represented Persona. I'm bringing up Persona, because I think this is where you got this misunderstanding about me.
Tachikoma's are not in confliction with GITS at all, as they have been around in the gits universe since day one.
That & the Tachikomas serve as interesting commentary about the opposite side of the whole "what exactly defines humanity" theme of the gits franchise.
Wow, that's just sad. YOU'D think the creator had a bit more originally than that. I mean for God's sake if you're gonna make a new story throw some originallity in there. *rolls eyes*
That was actually the point of Inuyasha. Rumiko just wanted to make something stupid as hell that she knew would sell.
As she basically reused plot points that she herself has already made popular in the past.
Inuyasha is basically a composite of Ranma 1/2 (One of the best comedy shows of all time.) Maison Ikoku, & Lum.
Look at Inuyasha, yeah it was good the first few seasons, but then it just got too repetitive and crappy, yet it was still none-the-less adored by every emo/otaku alive. Honestly...... :/
LOL, yeah I think the same could be said about all Rumiko Takahashi based anime.
They always start out good for the first three season, but then they start to suck once it gets to the fourth.
Ranma 1/2 for example is one of the grea-*test*-('") animes imo, but I only care about the first three seasons, & the ovas.
The rest of the series sucks ass.
the relationship between ristuko, misato, and kaji was definitely one of the more well constructed aspects of the show
I second that. The subtlety of Kaji's death, and Misato's sadness about the incident were handled rather maturely imo.
I was actually into Evangelion when I saw those episodes.
It's just too bad that it had to get all pretentious during the end.
I didn't hate evangelion until it got to its controversial finale.
Those episodes felt like they were constantly insulting me with their condescendingly self revelations.
