Golgo 13 first impressions.... Gives off a bit of a retro vibe, particularly with the music . The first ep is all about Golgo getting a job, then while prepping for a job he gets himself laid, after which he avoids a mob ambush, nails the job, then walks away scot free.
Nothing mindblowing on the production value front.
Kroni- 04-11-2008
I was just thinking about doing a topic for this, as the last anime that interested me was friggen Shigurui.
Sounds like an average day in the life of Duke Togo.

Hallelujah, I'm glad that the production wasn't overblown. I was worried that they were going to make Golgo 13 look way too new, fresh & hip for the current generation. I thought it was going to end up looking all cel shaded like the Blade of Immortal http://mugen.kc.kodansha.co.jp/
cartoon.
I was also worried that they might give Duke Togo emotions & a girl friend or some shit. Thankfully, everything that I love about G13 is kept intact.
What I always liked about G13 is how everything about the movie/manga has that whole 70/80's pimp swagger.
This looks straight up vintage Golgo.

It looks like the pointless sex scenes are still intact.

Just for the record, Duke Togo made a cameo (or was it a parody?) in an episode of the anime Ghost Sweeper Mikami
Dalemushashi- 04-12-2008
I didn't know that their was going to be a BotI anime. Top Drunkee did you read the manga? Because it looks pretty true to the original art style to me.
I still haven't seen The Professional I'll have to that. I'm surprised their bringing him back now.
KIRBY 7- 04-12-2008
It's Golgo 13's 4oth/50th something anniversary or something like that. WHich is why they decided to finally make a cartoon out of the manga.
G-13 episode 1http://www.veoh.com/videos/v6876512pzzfkZ5p
THe intro kicks ass.
G-13 is screwing some hot blonde chick during the intro. LOL, it makes me laugh seeing how absurdly hardcore G-13 still is even when in tv animated format.
THe only thing I don' like about the anime is that the opening & ending credits don't sound like typical G-13 tracks.
Golgo 13 music is supposed sound like smooth pimp jazz music. (Like the music you hear in Killer7.)
I didn't know that their was going to be a BotI anime. Top Drunkee did you read the manga? Because it looks pretty true to the original art style to me.
I have nothing against the art style. I just have a problem with the way the show looks. It looks way too clean, & shiny. Which is what I meant when I said that the show looks cel shaded.
BOI is supposed to be dark & gritty looking. With natural lighting & shadows. Not this crisp, clean computer generated looking bullshit.
Which is why I'm glad that Golgo 13 tv still retains it's dark, gritty 80's/early 90's look.
The BOI cartoon reminds moi of the Ninja Scroll tv series.
I could never get into the Ninja Scroll tv series, because It just didn't look gritty or as foreboding as the original source material.
I was expecting Blade of the Immortal to look all grainy like the Berserk cartoon.
Just for the record, Duke Togo made a cameo (or was it a parody?) in an episode of the anime Ghost Sweeper Mikami
Golgo 13 has made a cameo appearance in almost everything.
He was even in an episode of "Oh! Super Milk Chan"
A lot of people say all this random ass shit is big in Japan, but Golgo 13 happens to be one of the only properties that I know of that actually is big in Japan.
You see his ugly ass mug almost everywhere you go. Sometimes pictures of him would be mixed in with celebrity pics, & what not.
I was actually quite surprised that Killer 7 didn't bother to reference Golgo 13 at all. Considering that Killer 7 referenced Meiko Kaji/Sasori.
Dalemushashi- 04-12-2008
Yeah your right, Sumura's rough pencil sketches aren't done justice here. I love how almost every drawing of his has a few extra lines at the edges of every object.
Visionnerz- 04-13-2008
Oh damn, I didn't know the new Golgo was already out.. gotta look out for it.
Judging by the official site, I also like how the design wasnt too "updated". Still looks like Golgo.
decoy- 04-17-2008
Sub version is out, style and attitude of togo is intact, but animation is belowaverage.
Specially the sex scene, i mean comeon, the sexscene is nothing but still images with moans, no movement or frames WTF? Whats the point if they just want to give idea of sex.
Action was nice, but again the violence level isnt apar with even kite.
I like direction of OVAs than series, going for OVAs against thirteen episodes is better idea, atleast you can invest in more animation, frames and smoothnes like kite/hellsing.
Appleseed EX sucked though, i didnt like it.
Hellsing final ova was nice, liked all of them.
My best series at present is blassreiter, you can check it out two episodes on youtube.
Visionnerz- 04-17-2008
Yeah the animation isnt the best, but then again, this is goin to be 50 episodes. Might be a bit too much for something like Golgo 13.. but I loved the first episode.
KIRBY 7- 04-17-2008
Blasreiter actually has decent production values.

Part of the reason for Golgo 13's lack of quality has to do with the fact that the legendary Osamu Tezuka. (He worked on the Golgo 13 movie & the Queen Bee OVA.)
Is working on the anime version of Ultra Violet.
http://www.japanprobe.com/?p=4216
The reason why I like the anime is because it remains faithful to the manga. The plots are only as engaging as the target itself.
While the first episode may have not been much.
The first target wasn't that interesting. Just wait until it gets to some kick ass conspiracy angles.
decoy- 04-17-2008
Wow tht Uviolet animation sucks badly, he should have stick to golgo, too bad when director gets limited budget.
BTW fifty episodes, thats news to me, i thought it was thirteen.
Does kite lib. has one ova , coz all sites mention one and only one.
OVA ends on cliffhanger.
Kroni- 04-17-2008
Yeah, fifty eps. Probably won't even cover a tenth of the manga, still. Too bad the director is stuck on the fucking ultraviolet animu, that movie sucked. They should have stuck with Golgo.
Btw, that episode was fucking GAR.
decoy- 04-18-2008
I want manga, translated, any site to dload them?

Osamu Tezuka is pretty much the godfather of anime. So I guess that the people who controlled the rights to Ultra Violet paid him tooth & nail just to get Tezuka's dream team working with them.
(Sucks too. Golgo 13 the Professional is one of the best damn films of all time.)
A similar case happened earlier with Kawajiri. He was supposedly "working" on Ninja Scroll 2, but then he had to call it off when he was commissioned to do the Highlander anime.
(I highly doubt that Ninja Scroll 2 was ever in production stages.)
Yeah, fifty eps. Probably won't even cover a tenth of the manga, still.
The anime isn't adapted from the manga. Not that I know of at least.
I think the first episode was an original hit made specifically for the anime.
The Golgo 13 manga is pretty much like an American comic like Batman. (It's one of those infinite stories where the protagonist stays the same age no matter what. There's no strict continuity between hits. The stories are laid out in the same fashion as the hits for the "Hitman" games.)
The viz comics translation of Golgo 13 isn't a good gauge to see how typical some of his hits are, because Viz only translated Goglo 13's Best 13 hits. The volumes that got translated into English make Duke's life look even more cool than it actually is.
I have a couple of Japanese volumes, and I can safely say that most of his hits are rather bland just like the first episode.
As I said earlier, Golgo 13's plot is only as interesting as the target himself/herself.
Yup Golgo 13 kills women too. He's a professional through & through.
I remember in Queen Bee, he didn't bother to take the job that Queen Bee requested until after he killed her. Golgo 13 never takes on more than one job. So Golgo 13 had to kill her first in order for her to get revenge on the U.S. president.
(The president originally commissioned Golgo 13 to kill Queen Bee. Golgo 13 also never calls off a hit, because he's THE PROFESSIONAL, lol.)
When I said that the anime was just like the manga. I was referring more to the formalic "Golgo 13" story telling style.
1. He takes a job.
2. He shags some random bitch. Who may or may not die after fucking him.
3. He kills some random assholes,
4. and then he finally kills his target.
(If he doesn't miss, or if somebody didn't beat him to his target yet.)
5. The target's background story is inserted somewhere within the episode before Golgo 13 kills him or her.
The movie Golgo 13 the Professional was epic, because Golgo 13 had to confront the CIA, FBI, and many of the other alphabet agencies in retaliation for a hit he just committed.
That normally doesn't happen in a normal day of Golgo's life though.
Which is why it's a movie.
The first episode of the G-13 anime is more typical of what a day in the life of Golgo is like.
These forum posts pretty much says all that needs to be said about the basis of Golgo 13's plot line.

Are the Golgo enemies in the manga's as bizarre as from the Professional? I mean the Trio, Gold & Silver, Snake?
Or just plain enemies?Re: Golgo Enemies in Manga

From the few that I've read, the enemies really aren't that bizarre. Most of them are believable characters set during different times in history.

There are no bizarre characters. The point of Golgo 13 is to provide, almost a theory if you will how events in history may have occurred if an assassin were involved.
If you notice. During the end of the first episode. The hit that Goglo just committed was actually credited to the swat team rather than some lone hitman.
That right there is one of the main reasons why Golgo 13 is so intriquing to moi.
He's like mothafucking Forrest Gump. Most of the urban myths, & conspiracies of our world actually revolve around him & his trademark bullet in between the eyes.
(Kinda like how Forrest Gump was at the fore front of many world events in his movie.)
