how hard is it to become a video game developer I've always wanted to become one but does anyone know what they have to go through, know, and what college to go to?

I've went through a similar process, although in the end we didn't get to actually make a game or get approved. So my knowledge is relatively limited.
College education aside.... Well you definitely need a team to help you out, so knowing a whole bunch of people is a start. Next is having the kind of business skills where it's not too much trouble gathering funds to pay your team of artists and coders to put together a pitch package along with a game demo. Another reason why money's involved is because of dev kits. It sounds retarded, but there are lots of people out there who prefer to see what the eff they're dealing with. Those are the people who prefer not to spend a cent doing something from scratch.
There are free templates you might be able to find on how to put together the paperwork for a pitch package.
Remember to keep it short and sweet. And when you're presenting it, you have to convince whoever's listening that it's going to make them shitloads of money.
There's a couple blogs out there by Tim Schafer and David Cage that somewhat details what crap they had to go through when they made their games Grim Fandango and Indigo Prophecy respectively.

From what I understand, it's pretty hard. Mostly because it's filled with hacks who think it's some fun little game where you get to create your own video games, not realizing it's really hard work. If you're a devoted gamer, and really would want to pursue a career in the field, I'd say go for it, and don't give up if it seems a little tough at first.
