KUNG FU! Who on here likes Kung Fu movies? I love em! It's somewhat of my specialty :P I could go on and on about em! Please tell me there's another person on here who knows the kung fu love!
KillerPenguin- 04-06-2006
jackie chan's kung fu movies are frequently just Uber-spalstick (made into teh best kind of slapstick by him kung fu skills)
the old jet li films (legend of fong sai yuk, one upon a time in china, etc.) are good.
lol, kung fu hustle.
Jedilink- 04-08-2006
Kung Fu Hustle is awesome! I really like mostly ALL of Jackie Chan's movies (not that I've seen em all of course), except for Battle Creek Brawl...something about Jackie Chan fighting "wrestlers" just really wasn't that great...his other stuff is moslty all fantastic! My fav of his is by FAR Drunken Master II (a.k.a. Legend of Drunken Master here in the states).
Jet Li is great! I really like him he's charismatic and that really helps him (His best are Fist of Legend, but HERO is unquestionably his BEST film EVER!!!!!!!)!
He's not really a kung fu star, but Toshiro Mifune has some REALLY awesome movies! Check out Samurai Rebellion. That movie is great! Oh and do I need to even MENTION Seven Samurai? I don't think so. :P
Check out Ong-Bak! It is amazing! If you wanna see some great Mui Thai Boxing at it's BEST, check this film out! This is like Chan's Rumble in the Bronx. I think it could REALLY help out Tony Jaa's career (hopefully especially here in the states :D)
I don't know...I watch Asain movies a lot (they are usually more interesting than American films!) so if you want any suggestions, just ask...I'm pretty knowledgeable. But right now...I'm gonna go watch a movie! :D
KillerPenguin- 04-11-2006
Jackie chan > Jet Li.
Jet Li's good, verygood. but he can't beat Jackie chan.
lol, Tony Jaa. i saw ong-bak, but it was different from rumble in the bronx.
the guy did all of the stunts (including setting his trousers on fire) - it was on teh special features.
Jedilink- 04-11-2006
Well, I meant that the movie is like Chan's "RitB" because the ads are all about "He does his own stunts! No wires!" and so forth :P That's what I meant...Might not have seemed like it but yeah.
Has anyone seen Master of the Flying Guillotine? It's all kinds of cool! How about Fearless Hyena? I love it!!!! Check those flicks out people!!!
Jedilink- 04-24-2006
Ok a recent Wuxia (Kung Fu) flick that I've LOVED...is Hero. Jet Li's BEST film no matter WHAT anyone says and if anyone tells me they don't like it I tend to look at em like they're retarded or something...I just can't help it! One of the grea-*test*-('") movies I've ever seen! Hmm...I really like a REALLY old "Jackie Chan" film called The Killer Meteors. It has Chan in it, but the main character is played by Jimmy Wang Yu (The One Armed Boxer from Master of the Flying Guillotine). In fact it's the ONLY movie I've EVER seen where Jackie Chan plays.........a bad guy....SERIOUSLY! He's the main bad guy in the film! His name is the Immortal Wa! I love that movie, it was the first REAL Kung Fu movie I had ever seen and it's STILL one of my favorites to this day! Check it out!
Now a recent Gem of a fu flick that I've found is called, "Hidden Darts". This movie is funnier than any comedy you can throw at me (except maybe some Stephen Chow movies perhaps!)!!! I guarantee it too!!! The English dubbing sounds like a bunch of College kids saying random crap to each other. They probably never had a REAL script they just watched it in Chinese and figured out what was going on from that! :P And this probably IS true! I think that I'll change my signature to include one of the quotes from the movie. It has some of the funniest lines I've ever heard in a movie, check it out it's a riot! It came with the "Wu Tang Clan 20 movie boaxed set" There's not actually 20 movies...only about 12 actually, but if you find it (I got my copy at Best Buy) I'd really recommend it if you can see humor in TERRIBLE films! They're all extremely awful but are all equally hilarious...I'd recommend it...if only ALL the programs on the discs were movies!

I don't really remember too much at Hero, but the story was excellent in that film. Which is kind of the opposite for Fist of Legend in my opinion, some of the grea-*test*-('") action sequences of all time, but I found the story to be a little lacking(though it could be because the western release completely sucked). Danny the Dog/Unleashed had some really cool fights, and I liked the story for it, definitely much better written than Luc Besson's recent works(Kiss of the Dragon and The Transporter). I grew up loving Jackie Chan movies, but it seems kind of undeniable that his work has gone downhill in recent years. Which is a shame, because Legend of Drunken Master was in a league of it's own. Bruce Lee movies are good, but the problem is Enter the Dragon was the only truly great one, the first two were horribly written, the third seemed to move way too slowly, and Game of Death sounds like it'd easily be one of the grea-*test*-('") Kung Fu films of all time (the Kareem Abdul Jabbar fight speaks for itself) if Bruce Lee had lived to see it through.

While the quality of Chan's films can be debated there is NO debating one of his recent films. New Police Story is FANTASTIC! It came out recently in the states on DVD and is is my favorite Chan film after Drunken Master 2 (the REAL name for Legend of Drunken Master). I'd say that LATELY Chan has been getting back on the right track. A few years ago (like 3-6 years ago that is) many people think he was making some bad flicks. He has kinda chilled out and laid back a bit. New Police Story is Chan's FINEST acting work that I've seen! He is a REALLY great actor in that film. Unquestionably!
Yeah I'm sick of these crappy American releases where the only way you can get the flick is in English. I mean, the dubbing in the American version of Fist of Legend is awful. Plus there's no reason that I am ONLY allowed to watch it in English if I can easily get a copy of the same film from Hong Kong that IS in the original language. Of course with old Kung Fu films this is often times impossible, however with newer films I think that the DVD companies should respect the ACTUAL Kung Fu fans and release their DVD's with the film in their original languages (and dubbed if they just HAVE to include that) and also with accurate subtitles. Many times I will know someone is saying something different than the subtitles say because I took a Chinese class last semester. This also happens with Japanese films too.....ugh.....oh well.
Yeah if you liked Hero you should check out House of Flying Daggers. It's directed by Zhang Yimou who also directed Hero. They also brought Tony Ching Siu Tung to do the kung fu Cheoreography. The film has Andy Lau, who is one of my favorite Chinese actors, he's really great! :D Along with Takeshi Kaneshiro (from Returner). And of COURSE, Zhang Ziyi (of Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and so on...). Check that one out it's great! :D
Even though Bruce Lee might be somewhat overrated, the man knows how to throw down! He is one awesome dude. I wouldn't mess around with that guy. Personally I think that the film that Fist of Legend is based on called, Fist of Fury (known in the states as Chinese Connection, the other film Lee film named Fist of Fury in the states is ACTUALLY Chinese Connection) is pretty good. Fist of Fury and Chinese Connection just had their names swapped in America is all....why I don't know, but they were....needlessly. :P
The film called Fist of Fury in America is pretty cool though too! That film is directed by Lo Wei. Wei directed the New Fist of Fury (starring Jackie Chan) as well as, Killer Meteors (With Chan and Jimmy Wang Yu), Chinese Connection (with Bruce Lee) and many others. I have a weird feeling about Lo Wei. Every time I see one of his movies, they always have some ridiculous ending for some reason. It's either completely obsurd (Killer Meteors) or is totally unnessesary and depressing (Fist of Fury...AND Chinese Connection). Well anyway, that's enough of my yacking on and on about kung fu flicks for now! Ask away if you want to know more! :P HAHA! I'm such a kung fu nerd I tell you.
Lisker- 06-22-2006
I think I heard about New Police Story somewhere, is it a Hong Kong film? I've kind of stopped watching Jackie Chan films lately, but I might check that out. I can kind of understand though why it is that Jackie would want to do less martial arts and stunts these days, I mean how old is the guy?
Bad dubbing's just the start of it(at least it's nowhere near as awful as in video games) they have to censor stuff and completely take some scenes out, and they often feel the need to replace the original soundtrack with some piece of crap. Look at Black Mask. I honestly think the music was so bad that it ruined the movie.
Was Andy Lau in Full-Time Killer? That was probably one of my favorite characters in a movie ever, that guy kicked ass.
Not a big Lo Wei fan. Fist of Fury and the Chinese Connection would've been nothing without Bruce Lee, and probably would've had more of that overexaggerated wire crap like was common before Lee came around. I haven't seen his Jackie Chan films, but I heard they were pretty bad and that he was just trying to make Chan the next Bruce Lee.
Not that I have anything against wires in martial arts films, at least if it's done right. Once Upon a Time in China II was a masterpiece.
Jedilink- 06-23-2006
OUATIC 2!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! What a FANTASTIC Kung Fu movie!!! :D Donnie Yen and Jet Li were GREAT!
But yeah, New Police Story is a HK flick. It's ALSO not one of Chan's kung fu comedy kinda films either. It's quite the serious film. I mean, yes it has some laughs but what movie doesn't anyway?
Lo Wei made a few good flicks! I watched Dragon Fist today. It's an early Chan film and I actually like it quite a bit! Lo Wei's movies are usually kinda crazy though. Like The Killer Metoers was the VERY FIRST actual Kung Fu film I ever saw (like 1970's kung fu movie kinda thing that is). It's STILL ont of my favorite kung fu movies to this day. There's a lot of crazy effects and the movie has loads of unintentional laughs too. It's also the ONLY Jackie Chan film I've ever seen where he actually plays.......the bad guy. Yeah I know it's crazy! Jackie Chan is 52! I know because he was born the same year as my dad, but the same day as my mom! Crazy huh? :P HAHA!
Yes Andy Lau played the character Tok in Fulltime Killer. I LOOOOOOOOOVE Fulltime Killer. One of my all time favorite HK gun action films (along with The Killer of course ;)! )! Yeah I love it because in that movie Tok likes to reference a bunch of other movies and I ALWAYS know what he's talking about it's great! :D:D:D:D
And I don't know about wire stuff being big in the 60's and earlier but I know that after Bruce Lee died, wire stuff became quite popular. Sometimes I forget he died in 73, but his FEW films he did made such an impact on the HK film industry. It wasn't until 76 when Chan came out with Snake Fist in Eagle's shadow that the kung fu genre really had any talent back in it. Most films in between either have terrible kung fu from a Bruce Lee ripoff (Bruce Li, Bruce Lo, Dragon Lee, and so on..) or the GOOD kung fu films weren't as popular. Regardless of his critics, Jackie Chan is a FANTASTIC martial artist, and made many films with great kung fu before he became famous. However these films weren't recognized so much since he wasn't very popular. Well, anyway. I just got me a new movie so I'm gonna go watch it! :D

Does Kung Fu hustle count as a kung fu movie or a spinoff?
Jedilink- 08-03-2006
I'd say that Kung Fu Hustle IS a kung fu movie because it's a Chinese movie and it has loads o Kung Fu! :P Of course there ARE Kung Fu movies from other countries too but China is where they originate....so there you go :P. And by the way, Kung Fu Hustle is awesome! :D:D:D:D:D I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE that movie! ^_^
ConSmithsAngel- 08-03-2006
I like em,I love the action and the hilarity of the wrong voice overs. You have disgraced my country! *mouth keeps moving for ten seconds*
Jedilink- 08-04-2006
Yeah the old ones can get MUCH funnier when they have the goofy dubbing on em. Check out Master of the Flying Guillotine some time! You should be able to find it at Best Buy or something. It's not too hard to find but boy is it funny. My copy was only 10 or 12 dollars so it's not a lot. That one is hilarious!
Jedilink- 01-16-2007
I got a lot of movies for Christmas and I also got a good deal of Kung Fu movies!!!! :D:D:D:D:D
I got this Shaw Brothers 10 movie set. They have it at Best Buy. It's all black on the front and has a man with a sword close to his face. It's a sweet boxed set, unfotunately I haven't watched any of the films yet! :P
I also got Jet Li's Fearless, which was really great. Killzone with Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung (it was pretty sweet, the Dragon Dynasty DVD, which is a new line of DVD's out, made a really great DVD). Tonight I got Seven Swords, which is also a Dragon Dynasty DVD too. I thought it was going to be more like Seven Samurai, and in some ways it has a FEW similar elements to it, but it's a very different film.
Jackie Chan's Police Story is also on the Dragon Dynasty DVD line (I don't have it yet, but I'll get it at some point) and I'd recommend that. I can't wait to see what other Dragon Dynasty DVD's come out since these ones were so nice! :D
I also got this 2 movie set with Shaolin Idiot (starring Stephen Chow, Bill Tung, and Yuen Wah, who is in the "Lucky Stars" group with Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung) and The Last Hero in China with Jet Li. Shaolin Idiot (which has no kung fu in it save for a tad bit near the end) was pretty funny. I feel that Chow has gotten MUCH better over the years since Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are 2 of my favorites of his. I haven't watched the other movie yet.
When I watch some of the Kung Fu flix on the Shaw Brothers 10 movie set, I'll post here and let everyone know how they are. Most of em have either Jimmy Wang Yu or The "Master Killer" Liu Chia Hui aka Gordon Liu so I think they'll be pretty sweet. :D Wang Yu is one of my favorites and I haven't seen a lot of the Master Killer, so this should be pretty cool. ^_^
See ya again when I've watched a few of these or something. :D
