Salo
Info here Has anyone seen it? It's a movie that's very hard to stomach and there's still much debate if there's a point to it's content (excessive cruelty and sadism committed by four men of high political and / or religious status and their accomplices to a group of nine young men and nine young women, shot in a very confronting and merciless manner) or not. If you haven't seen it, it's a good -*test*-('") for what you can handle in a movie. And if you have, I'd like to know your thoughts about it.

KIRBY 7- 01-25-2008

I've never seen it, nor heard of it for that matter, but damn. Salos sounds like it's for real. http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/00/11/salo.html I really need to see this sometime. It sounds like it's even more depressing than Grave of the Fireflys. (Granted not a good comparison. It seems that Salo's is supposed to be a documentary style Hostel film.) People try to say that Takashi Miike's violent gore films (IZO, Ichi the Killer) have deep depressing messages like Salos, but I'm just not seeing it. One of the things that I hated about Miike's Ichi the Killer is that he tried to "David Lynch" up the damn film. If you read the manga you would know that Ichi the Killer is just about insane mo'fo's doing insane ass shit to people. Ichi the Killer gets away with all the killing he does, because society eventually forgot about the crimes. Which is similar to how crimes are dealt with in real life. (To the public at least.) Unfortunately Miike fucked up the ending for Ichi by adding in an unneeded ending with Kakihara. I prefer the ending in the manga where Ichi eventually gets killed by Yakuza, simply because he stepped on their shoes by accident. Kakihara on the other hand died after Ichi chopped his dick off. (Kakihara fell to his death.) I know this Ichi rant seems random. It's just that Salos looks like a film that truly is disturbing. Violent shock films with a message often remind moi of Takashi Miike flicks.

Yeah...
I have Ichi laying around and did not dare to watch it yet. Scenes of sadism, rape and torture don't treat me well, heh... They leave images imprinted in my memory that will never be erased (Salo stays there, as well as the horrifying home invasion scene in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). And yet part of me wants to see it. Isn't Ichi supposed to be more cartoonish in its violence, in tune with the manga, though? Salo is pure terror. The sexuality in it is nothing but unarousing 'savagery' and there are no cuts, no averting of the eye. Supposedly it's an observation on Fascism.

Where are you from^^, india? You seem to love the actor so much that you had his avatar. I believe may be people who have indian roots , get too emotional by films, take film as film, though they emulate reality but such senseless gorefest films hardly are what i call 'society reflection'.

And most of the times blood feels like kethcup, not real.

Re: Yeah...
Isn't Ichi supposed to be more cartoonish in its violence, in tune with the manga, though? That's what they say, it's an excuse imo. While Ichi was a pretty good rendition of the manga. (Better than most movies. The movie version of Kakihara looked even more badass than the manga Kakihara.) I feel that Ichi is more cartoony than the original source material. The manga was pretty damn brutal & sadistic. (It was also funny as hell. Like Killer 7.) There's a scene where some Yakuza gets killed while he's filming some random hot pornstar chick masturbating. The guy who killed the Yakuza jams a sword straight threw the pornstars cunt, and says "it smells like fish." (lol) There's a scene where a girl gets her tits chopped off, because they were too big. That scene is also in the movie, but it's not as depraved as the manga. (You can get away with a lot more in a manga.) Part of the entertainment of the manga was to see what kind of crazy f'ed up thing they'd do next. We have a 3 page thread about the movie here. forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=96" target="_blank">http://killer7.6.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=96 Here's one of the final scenes when Jiji sends Karen to kill Ichi. (The old guy fucked Karen in the ass first, before she was set up to get mutilated & bukakaed on by Ichi.) This is Ichi 10 or something years later. About to get his ass killed by a Yakuza gang. What I didn't like about the Ichi movie was that it was too surreal. When it didn't need to be. The manga had a straight forward story with some plot twists. The only thing that was left up to interpretation was the old man. I compare Miike to Salo, because of films like IZO & Vistor Q. A lot of them are said to be social commentaries. (Well actually I could kind of see it with IZO. I've never seen Visitor Q yet.) Salo is pure terror. The sexuality in it is nothing but unarousing 'savagery' and there are no cuts, no averting of the eye. Supposedly it's an observation on Fascism. Yeah, I've heard as much. I get the impression that Salo probably looks like a film version of this, http://www.cassiopaea.org/cass/warning1.htm but with orgies. (You have to get page 3 or 4 before it starts to really get disturbing.) IMO, Salo seems to conjure up images from the medieval torture days. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2c/Hall_of_Orgies.jpg

I'm not from India and I don't love the actor (funny you know about him, though). The reason why I chose this sn + avatar is not relevant. In movies like Salo (can't speak for Ichi yet), you might see actors, you might see 'special effects', you might see some exaggeration. But there's an ugliness there that's all too real. Events on display as in Salo might very well go on somewhere in the world at the time i'm writing this. That's the reality of it and a movie like this reminds me of that. Also, (correct me if I'm misunderstanding you or if I'm being extreme), if you watch every movie with emotional disattachment, then what's the point? Yeah, I've heard as much. I get the impression that Salo probably looks like a film version of this, http://www.cassiopaea.org/cass/warning1.htm but with orgies. It'll happen, though.

Re: ...
Also, (correct me if I'm misunderstanding you or if I'm being extreme), if you watch every movie with emotional disattachment, then what's the point? No actually its nice question. Its relative thing, it depends on what is affecting you or what can affect you. For me films should be as real possible, one that can immerse me first then show something related to'stirring up emotions'. Finally it comes to special effects or makeup in this case, as i said the blood was too fake for my taste to take it emotionally. There are too many factors, but development of characters are necssary, caharcters for whom you can fel, then how the scene is presented, are there any flops or shortcomings? If therre are it detachs you from the world. BTW, i am filmdirector myself, so when i am into movies i detect how they are doing this, so that i can learn,on other hand if i know how did they do that, its not interesting enough to get excitement from, then i criticize that. I normally get emotional on films which reflects society and human drama, and be real at that.

Raj Kumar- 01-29-2008
Right, right...
Thanks for elaborating. I understand where you're coming from.

decoy- 01-29-2008

I would like to hear your assumption :)

Raj Kumar- 01-30-2008
Haha...
I would like to hear your assumption :) I was wondering if you were trying to hit me from the 'if you have an emotional reaction to a movie, you're a pussy' angle. :)

decoy- 01-30-2008

no i didn't mean it that way. Its better to clear misconception, i meant draw line between emotion and what is 'sick'. i dont feel emotional over sick thing i vomit. The last scene in iressistble, is most impactful scene, skull crusher with cylinder was too hard for me to digest. Films like ichi and saw are more 'sick' just for the sake of it, they feel you vomit and hard to digest. You are perhaps getting emotional over sick things. sick/wicked gore and violence is always hard to digest for any human heart/mind.

You guys are taking Ichi waaaaaaaaay too seriously. It's a fun brutal movie based off of a fun brutal Manga, theirs no hidden meanings about real life or super deep symbolism(Their is some symbolism). What makes Miike's work so great is he doesn't try very hard, he thinks of random insane stuff that viewers will enjoy and he puts them in a movie. Not very different then a lot of people who do comedy, it's just basic enjoyment of intense or bizarre moments. I didn't know that the artwork for the Ichi manga was that good and realistic  , I was expecting a rougher style like Freeasia. This Salo film movies seems interesting.

Akura- 02-04-2008

Salo was actually based on a 'book' written by a French dude named Marquis de Sade. I say 'book' because apparently he wrote it on a long, long scroll of paper while in prison with his own faeces. You can download the eBook here: http://supervert.com/elibrary/zips/sade_120_days_pdf.zip Naturally, the movie is modernised, now taking place in the Republic of Salo rather than 18th century France. Interestingly enough, the director of the film was killed shortly after its release.

You guys are taking Ichi waaaaaaaaay too seriously. It's a fun brutal movie based off of a fun brutal Manga, theirs no hidden meanings about real life or super deep symbolism(Their is some symbolism). I never said there was, but that doesn't stop most Miike fans from believing Ichi to have a deeper meaning. Which is where my argument stems from. I don't take the movie too seriously at all, because it doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. I don't see any deeper meaning to it at all. Other than ones that people may have formed from idiosyncrasies. I for one thought that Ichi was boring as fuck, and you know what? That's a fucking paradox. I'd be thinking that I of all people would love a movie that starts out with a guy ejaculating the title of the film with his own semen. A movie where a guy was so fucking badass that he chopped off his own fucking tongue. A movie where a guy chops some chicks tits off, etc. Sadly I just can't get into Ichi. For two reasons 1. I've seen much better Yakuza films. Yakuza films are always brutal, & sometimes fun. (Riki Takeuchi) When it comes to fun pointless gore, I can always count on Ryuhei Kitamura who gets the job done. (With a shit load of style.) Miike's style just seems way too "artsy" to pull off "fun brutal gore". Or at the least pull it off in a way that's actually entertaining. This review pretty much says all that I would want to say about Ichi if we look at this film as a pure Yakuza flick. http://www.supertoni.ch/71429/141283.html Audition was surprisingly the Miike film that I liked most out of all the Miike films I've seen. Part of the reason had to with it's pacing. Audition may have been slow, but it fit within the context of the film. Everything in Audition was there for a reason. To create tension & build up for the final scene. Not so with Ichi the Killer. If Ichi the Killer truly were supposed to be a pure brutal fun movie. Why is it that Miike opted to insert pointless David Lynchian scenes during the end of the movie? That pointless bullshit wasn't in the manga at all. So that throws the excuse of trying to keep true to the manga out. In the manga Kakihara just got his dick cutoff & than he fell to his death while trying to run away from Ichi. I much prefer the straight forward showdown finale of the manga over the pretentiousness of the film's finale. I do like artsy shit, but only when it's warranted. Ichi the Killer didn't show any signs of intelligence earlier on. So why should it pretend to be something it's not during the final reel? I love the manga, because it was funny as hell, & pointlessly violent throughout the entirety of the book. Most of all it did not try to insult my intelligence by adding in uneeded "artsy" bullshit. 2. I've read & own the manga. Everything the movie did just pales in comparison. A lot of Miike fans like to defend the movie & claim that Ichi had over the top violence, because the manga it's based off of did. I call bullshit on that, because Ichi the Killer was pretty brutal, & far less cartoony than it's movie counterpart. Both Manga & film have similar deaths, scenarios, & kills. (More or less. Miike rewrote several parts, because it would be hard to find two muscle bound giants like the twins in the manga. Most of the kills are also too brutal like the part when one of the twins sticks a sword up some girls cunt.) The manga depicted it's violence in a more straight forward "only insane ass mothafuckas" would do this shit. The film tried to go for the insane mothafucka approach, but it ended up looking cartoony instead. I just feel that it's wrong how the comic that Ichi was based off on looked more realistic. In retrospect the Ichi movie does a better job of replicating cartoony manga form than the original manga did. Miike does deserve points for that. However I think the praise is misplaced. Especially since the manga it's based off of had a far more realistic, & brutal approach to violence than the movie did. The one thing that Miike kept intact was the comedy. However the tension was lost in transition from comic to film. In short, I like a movie like Versus, because it's fun. Didn't like Ichi, because it's boring. (I love the manga.) What makes Miike's work so great is he doesn't try very hard, he thinks of random insane stuff that viewers will enjoy and he puts them in a movie. I don't know. IMO that final Ichi the Killer scene in the movie happens to be the exact opposite of what you're claiming here. I guess the main problem for me is that I'm actually familiar with the manga it's based off on. I did not like the "art house" pretension that was added to the Ichi the Killer movie at all. I love the manga, because it's ballz fucking insane with no retarded artsy dream sequences added in at all. (I would love to see Kitamura's take, since I feel that Ichi is more up his alley.) That dream shit just seemed so random & out of place. I would've settled for Kakihara just getting his head cut off, & Ichi getting ran over by a car. Kakihara committing suicide? That's bullshit. Might as well give him black eyeliner too, and a copy of My suicide romance. Naturally, the movie is modernised, now taking place in the Republic of Salo rather than 18th century France. Interestingly enough, the director of the film was killed shortly after its release. I've heard that his actual death is also a conspiracy. Many people believe it was some kind of mob hit. Thanks for the background though, it does show some perspective as to why some of it's scenes tend to look feudal.
