I stopped buying manga when I started reading translations :D
Beside for Märchen Awaken Romance but that's because the scans I found were horribles.

Um, Watchmen isn't Manga. It's an American comic book.....1985?!?!?!?
PLEASE don't tell me that you've read manga and/or comics and you've never even HEARD of Watchmen!?!?!?! This is a book you should read. The front says it was on Time magazine's Top 100 books to read list. Of course that's coming from the same magazine who made EVERYONE people of the year last year....uh, never mind that. It's an American book, so it isn't translated....unless you can't already speak English. READ IT NOW OR I KILL YOUR FACE!!!!

I've known about this for a while, but I have yet to actually read it.

It's about Superheros. During the late 30's into the 50's, many people (influenced by comic book heros and whatnot) decided to dress up and go out on the streets themselves in order to keep justice in their town pretty much. However (the book takes place in 85) in 1977 superheros were outlawed unless you work for the governement.
So now....something has begun happening to change the lives of all of these ex-heros. Since it's still before the Cold War ended, that is a major issue. Nixon had the constitution changed in order to stay for more terms...(so he's president during the book).
Umm....what else can I say without giving spoilers away? :P Oh, Rorshach is like the coolest dude ever! Haha. :P But yeah the book is in a really interesting setup. There are the chapters that are comics and to end them they have reading portions, which may be from part of a book one of the characters wrote or pieces from a scrapbook, an essay someone in the book wrote. These parts lend deeper narrative and understanding to these characters who aren't always fully explained during the comic portions. This in turn helps the reader to sympathize more with everyone and actually get into the complex history that the superhero phenomenon has brought upon the world.
I just think that it's a really good book so far. I'm nearing the end...and it's really good. :D
Oddly enough, this is the first "book" I've read in a long time. :P Oh no wait I got the three disc set for Oldboy and read the manga that came with that.
The guy who wrote Watchmen also wrote V For Vendetta. As well as a bunch of other stuff. And just thinking of the MOVIE V For Vendetta (I haven't read the book, although I will get it hopefully after I finish Watchmen) I can see the atmosphere and the type of storytelling and writing and all that that was in Watchmen.
Anyway, if you like Manga, comics, or just books in general, I'd recommend getting it...and this coming from someone who is MUCH MUCH more of a movie fan than a book fan. This one makes me really want to try and get more manga and comics like this and stuff (and I NEED to get the rest of Akira, as I only have the first volume. :P) But anyway, I'd check it out! ^_^ Well I AM....but you should too. :P

I'm a big fan of Watchmen. It's the comic book that reinvented comic books.
The film comes out in 2009, and the cast was announced at Comicon. Kind of surprised by the lack of big names, I heard Jude Law and Tom Cruise were interested.

Holy shit! Can't believe I missed your thread Jedilink. >_<
I got 'round to reading this a few months back after tracking down a copy for cheeeeep. Fuckin' H-AMAZIN' SCENES. Rorschach, is indeed the mutts nutz. I'm currently buyin' up all the original releases now. Onto Vendetta next, methinks. I'm only just properly discovering graphic novels. A n00b is me.

i love the watchmen. it's one of those comics that you litterally find something new everytime you read it. like the page layout in rorshach's issue that is set up like a rorshach -*test*-('"). don't believe me? go back and look at the page layouts starting at the middle with adrian and his assassin. you'll shit when you notice it.
the movie is being made by zack snyder (dawn of the dead 2004 and 300) so i have faith he won't fuck it up too badly.
